[Steve woke before the soldiers could continue to taunt him. He sighed, running a hand through his hair after a moment.]

I don't imagine that you would have, sir. No one else here has. [ There is a trifle of bitterness in his voice, then he nods at Steve. ]

That's what happens when we all come different worlds, I guess.

Bonds. They're like...almost lending money to the government. The government uses the money to support the war. It helps get soldiers supplies and weapons to be able to maintain the fight.

Why doesn't your munitorum just levy taxes? That would be more efficient.

Oh, they do. But no one really likes taxes, do they? Instead of raising them, the government sell bonds. Gets people to give money freely, and lets people feel like they're involved in the war.

Not everyone can fight, though. And the war was so far from home.

I'm from Earth, but...guess there's a lot of versions of it if you ask around here. And who's to say that's even where you're from.

No, I am from the Segmentum Ultima. It is the 42nd millennium of mankind... where, or rather when, I am from.

That's..a pretty big gap from my time. [That's the most futuristic he's ever met here, even...

A large one indeed. We know so very little about your time, but it does not seem so dissimilar from my own. There were wars, and men to fight them.

But for a time there was peace, and Unity.

Sounds pretty similar to me. [His soft smirk fades a little at the mention of peace.]

Peace seems like something we'll never get, in my time. But I hear the war ends soon. [....But then there's Korea and Vietnam, then the Cold War.....]

It is possible. But in my experience, there is only war. I was made for it, after all. But... I suppose humans may have a different experience. [ He sounds mattter of fact, not regretful. Utterly at peace with an existence of utmost savagery and brutality. ]

And you're not human? [He's not...100% human either, but he still prefers peace. Yeah, he was made to be a solider too, but that didn't mean he preferred war.]

I was human once, but I have been genehanced and augmetically altered to the point where I am generally referred to as a posthuman. Or, more to the point, an Astartes, or Space Marine.

And...you're saying....you were made to be a soldier? Or, uh - a 'Space Marine.' [Just making sure he'll following this correctly.]

Well, I wasn't forced, if that is what you mean. [ He smiles a little at the concept. ]

But yes, from the age of 13 or so I was an aspirant with the Ultramarines chapter, and started the process of becoming what I am now.

Sounds a little like what happened to me. 'Cept I'm still human. I think. [Pausing and rubs the back of his head. Schmidt had said something about them leaving humanity behind, but...he still felt human. And he has limits. It wasn't like he was all powerful or something.]
