[Wow, Steve seems ok with it now. Not cool. There's a slight hint of sarcasm in his tone when he speaks next:] And what would it take for us to be friends, captain? How many acts of kindness would I have to perform? I already risked my own life to save people in the warehouse, perhaps that is why Peggy saved my life. Perhaps I convinced her.

[Such disappointment that Steve doesn't respond to his insinuating remarks about Peggy. And then he starts going on about not liking killing and all that. Yargh. Schmidt is starting to regret even making this call, because Steve is free to say what he likes, free to go on about his ideals and just be himself, but Schmidt couldn't really talk openly with him. And yet hanging up on Steve felt akin to running from a fight to him.

Still, he tries to calm down a little, tries to keep the anger and the hate out of his voice when he answers, but he probably fails.]
Yes, Peggy was quite insistent of these good qualities of yours. Is that why Erskine chose you, captain, is that what made you special, even if you refuse to see it? [Yup, there's that question again. And he doubts he'll get a satisfactory answer, either. Plus the things Peggy had said to him about why Steve was chosen? Nope, not good enough for him.]
